For young lawyers and law students, hearing the news about big law bonuses going over the top can just feel cruel. After all, the vast majority of lawyers don’t work at big law firms, and most law students have no realistic chance of landing one of those coveted big law jobs after graduation.
Nonetheless, when bonus news breaks, the legal blogs will cover it, good, bad, or whatever. The most recent bonus news to break will be leaving small group of lawyers with big smiles on their faces, while the rest of just ooh and ah and dream, then humbly remember what Biggie taught us.
The long hours, the demeaning bosses, the backstabbing, the lack of meaningful work … for most associates in BigLaw, the money is what makes it all worth it (at least that’s what us outsiders have to believe in order to get out of bed in the morning).
Can’t Buy Happiness
While the problems that come along with having money seem to pale in comparison to the problems related to not having money, it’s been noted time and time again that big firm associates are among the unhappiest bunch. After all, what’s the point of all that money if you don’t have time to spend it, or the time to enjoy it.
