A consultant scooped the annual law school rankings by U.S. News and World Report, but that’s no surprise.

The Spivey Consulting Group has been right about the rankings before. After all, it’s just an early release of the same rankings and the usual suspects round out the top spots.

But it is surprising to see some law schools charging up the charts and others going down hard. Among other hard-chargers, U.C. Berkeley has cracked the top 10.

Moving On Up

Last year, Berkeley’s School of Law ranked Number 12. This year, it is Number Nine.

In the top two dozen among 144 ranked law schools, U.C. Irvine jumped up seven spots to Number 21 and George Washington University came in at Number 24.

Pepperdine, Denver, Miami, and Villanova each went up 12 places in the rankings. Of course, there were some losers.

Moving On Down

University of Utah and Rutgers law schools fell most precipitously on the chart.

According to reports earlier this month, it was “human error” at the Utah State Bar. Of course, the state bar’s mistake had nothing to do with the Utah law school’s ranking.

Perhaps it was the cringe factor that led the ezine to shout it out with the law school rankings. Alas, to err is human, to cringe divine.
