After all, lawyering is one of the most prestigious jobs a person can get if they can’t stomach the sight of blood. For prospective law students that see lawyering or law school as a fallback plan, their optimism at falling up is commendable. Unfortunately, unless money is no object to you, or you worked hard enough to earn significant scholarship and grant money, law school is not a good backup or fallback plan....

According to attorneys-turned-literary agents, it’s harder to be a literary agent. Lawyers often complain about long hours, but literary agents have no off-hours. NASCAR driver Kurt Busch testified in court earlier this week that his former girlfriend is a trained assassin hired to kill people around the world. Busch’s eyebrow-raising testimony came during a hearing over a no-contact order requested by Patricia Driscoll, Busch’s allegedly deadly ex-girlfriend. What happens in a jailhouse interview room, doesn’t always stay in a jailhouse interview room. A Georgia lawyer learned that the hard way, after an inmate snitched on him for allegedly trying to trade contraband for sexual favors. Michael Stuart Winner, 45, of Sandy Springs, Ga., was booked into the Cobb County jail after allegedly making indecent proposals to two female inmates at the jail, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Winner met with the inmates in the jail’s attorney-client meeting rooms, where he offered to smuggle items like drugs or tobacco in exchange for sexual favors, according to an arrest warrant....

First there was a senior prostitution ring at a nursing home, now a nursing home is facing a lawsuit for a stripper show. Bernice Youngblood, 85, a patient at East Neck Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in New York, and her family are suing her nursing home for urging her to participate and view a strip show against her will, according to the Associated Press. The rehab center said the show was requested by the resident committee....

For a night cap, the police showed up and treated the 19 year-old offensive lineman to a Tasering and arrest. Police accused him of first-degree criminal trespass, second-degree criminal mischief and resisting arrest. He has since been dismissed from the football team....

Caught red-fingered? With his hands in the Play-Doh jar? Any way you pun it, one man’s cat burglar-like efforts to thwart anti-theft devices at a Leicester, Massachusetts Walmart backfired in a pretty impressive fashion, leading to his arrest. The evidence he left behind? A solitary fingerprint in a piece of yellow and red Play-Doh. The first rule of Walmart Shoplifting Club? Wear gloves. Dennis Jackson either wasn’t aware of the rule or ignored it when he tried to shoplift electronics from a Walmart by covering up anti-theft devices with wads of Play-Doh....

How does your firm determine who gets particular projects? According to a non-equity partner at Reed Smith, the firm makes its determinations based on sexual favors. According to JoEllen Lyons Dillon, Reed Smith pays and promotes women less than men. In addition, Dillon claims that work is given to female attorneys particularly when they engage in sexual relations with Reed Smith’s management. Because she refused to engage in sexual relations with management, she did not receive the projects that she sought after, according to Dillon’s suit....

The Ellis Act acts as a check on California’s fairly tenant-friendly landlord/tenant laws. Even notwithstanding tougher locals laws (like those in Los Angeles and San Francisco), the Ellis Act allows a landlord to evict a tenant if he’s getting out of the landlord business altogether. Here’s the kicker: In San Francisco, where the median market rent is now almost $3,500 for a one-bedroom apartment, landlords often find that it makes more economic sense to get out of the landlord business and sell their properties to someone else – rather than continue to collect rent from long-term, practically unevictable tenants paying much lower than market rate....

Who knew that wearing a clown mask in public could get you arrested in Florida? That’s what happened to a Tampa man who was charged with a somewhat arcane offense of wearing a mask or hood on a public road over the age of 16, the Tampa Tribune reports. It is not clear why Lopez was wearing the mask, officials said. The charge is based on a 1951 law designed to combat the Ku Klux Klan, part of the section of Florida’s statutes dealing with criminal anarchy and treason....

Terrell Owens’ new Seattle Seahawks deal could affect his ongoing child support battle. The diva wide receiver got what he wanted with another shot in the NFL when he signed the deal with the Seahawks. However, Owens may have got more than he bargained for, as he could now be on the hook for the full amount of child support payment that he owes. When unemployed, T.O. asked a court to reduce his $5,000 monthly child support payments to the mother of one of his four children, reports The Atlanta Journal Constitution....

Sexual abuse in youth and collegiate sports has become far too common. From Dr. Larry Nassar at Michigan State to Jerry Sandusky at Penn State, coaches have been known to use their position of power and authority to coerce athletes into performing sexual acts in exchange for favor and attention. Popular youth sports such as soccer and swimming have seen their fair share of sexual abuse scandals. “You Owe Me This” In this latest lawsuit, plaintiffs allege Bohonyi coerced them into engaging in daily sexual acts and sending nude pictures of themselves, using his position of power to “trade sex for diving coaching....

We don’t need to tell you that the whole law school experience is changing these days. In fact, more and more schools have launched programs that will allow students to take at least a certain portion of their classes remotely through their computers. Vermont Law School has just announced its own version of what it calls the Reduced Residency JD Program, in hopes that it will start attracting more students and faculty from other schools....

If you’re a new 1L, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the new things you’re just supposed to know how to do. You’ve probably heard everyone talk about briefing (or outlining) cases. Good outlining and note taking are definitely skills that take some time to perfect, but they’re ones that are indispensable....

Last week, President Donald Trump signed a package of legislation regarding the Federal Aviation Authority, including a landmark effort to protect the rights of passengers with disabilities on airlines. The Airline Passengers with Disabilities Bill of Rights will increase civil penalties for bodily harm to passengers with disabilities or damage to wheelchairs and mobility aids, as well as create an advisory committee to recommend consumer protection improvements.
