Former World Series MVP Manny Ramirez was arrested for domestic battery in suburban Fort Lauderdale Monday evening, police say.

The former Boston Red Sox’s wife Juliana Ramirez told police she and her husband were both on the couple’s bed when he struck her with an open hand during an escalated domestic dispute, according to a police report by Weston Police officer Jose Campos.

Juliana Ramirez told police the blow caused her to hit her head on the headboard of their bed and, fearing the situation would escalate, she promptly called police, NBC Miami reports.

Manny Ramirez told police his wife hit her head after he grabbed her by the shoulders and ‘shrugged’ her, Officer Campos’ report states.

The police report notes red swelling was visible on the left side of Juliana Ramirez’ face, and that a contusion on the back of her head was consistent with her story. It was determined that Manny Ramirez was the primary aggressor.

Ramirez was booked at the Broward Sheriff’s Office main jail in Fort Lauderdale, according to online records.

Generally, the following elements must be proven to establish a case for battery:

  • an act by a defendant;
  • an intent to cause harmful or offensive contact on the part of the defendant; andharmful or offensive contact to the victim.

Based on the evidence cited in Campos’ report, it is no wonder Manny Ramirez was arrested. Domestic violence situations involve their own set of particularities, as police have adopted strategies and ways to deal with domestic violence.

Even before Manny Ramirez’s arrest, he had run-ins with authorities. In 2009, Ramirez was suspended 50 games by MLB for violating the league’s drug policy. Ramirez retired in April while playing for the Tampa Bay Rays after he was notified by Major League Baseball of an issue under MLB’s drug prevention and treatment program.
